How people are turning their ‘dream’ goals into ‘achieved’ goals
Over the past weeks, I’ve heard from a mate chasing a warmer lifestyle in QLD with his family, a gentleman who wants to work for himself, and a couple who are determined to buy their dream home on the Surf Coast.
In fact, I’ve had a lot of conversations with prospective individuals and families about goals they want to achieve next year and beyond. It’s no surprise that these enquiries are coming thick and fast in December. The New Year offers a clean slate — a chance to get things right.
When we set goals, we utilise self-efficacy, which means that by aspiring to a goal, we have a sense of control over what’s happening in our life.
But too many of us get caught up in ‘feeling good’ about setting goals and don’t get around to ‘making it happen’. In fact, more than 4 out of every 5 people fail to achieve their goals. Worse, many individuals fall into a goal trap – a black hole where they have the same resolution year after year.
What is lifetime goal mapping?
Retiring early, travelling more, changing careers, private schooling, having children, upgrading our home – all lifestyle goals cost something.
Simply put, Lifetime Goal Mapping is the ultimate answer to the ‘do the numbers stack up?’ question. It is a visual model of your lifestyle goals vs your financial position over your lifetime.
Why will it help you achieve your goals?
You’ll target the right goals
Many clients make goals & decisions based on feel as opposed to facts. Goal modelling shows you what goals are too easily achievable, those that you’re on track for and those that might need to be reassessed altogether. Knowledge is power – having the facts allows you to focus your energy on achievable goals. Hope will no longer be your strategy.
You’ll be motivated
The difference between achieving and failing a goal is the work in between. Most people fail to work to hit their dreams when their ‘why’ is unclear. By knowing the outcomes are achievable, you remove all doubt and have a complete emotional connection to the actions put in place.
You’ll make better decisions
Goal mapping is just that – a map. When your destination is clear, you’ll always be able to plan your route better. You’ll probably pick up on three things that will get you to your destination quicker. These weren’t so obvious when you didn’t have the map:
- There are many roadblocks, but most of them are avoidable with foresight.
- You’ll put more importance on getting to the destination as opposed to the means to get there. After all, there’s no joy in saving on tollways and car maintenance if you never get there.
- It’s easier to get to your destination with a map than without one.
You can choose your own adventure
Goal mapping is dynamic. Suppose you’re on track to achieve your destination ahead of time. In that case, you can always strive to add additional experiences.
